Abstract

|
Tuberculosis of the thyroid gland is a rare condition and not only the diagnosis of this condition on clinical ground is almost impossible but what is important is the fact that it can not be differentiated from tumors of the thyroid gland.
Goldberg stated that a clinical diagnosis of caseous tuberculosis of the thyroid gland has been made very few times in the past and only on those cases in which a cold abscess or a fistula was present, or in which tubercle bacilli were found in the pus or there was associated active pulmonary tuberculosis or local infection of lymphnode or larynx.
Also this disease must be differentiated from malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland. For this reason, surgical removal of the thyroid nodule is mandatory in order to establish definite diagnosis and to exclude the possibility of both benign and malignant tumor.
We report 2 cases of tuberculosis of the thyroid gland which we experienced at this hospital and on both cases excision was carried out.
